We see advertisements everyday, but i believe, that there are some advertisements that turn out to be tortures for those who expect quality and meaning in them. There are some advertisements which go too 'profound' for dimwits like me, and in particular, the "PSC Nite" advertisements. In fact, I am almost certain that at least 3 million out of the 3-4 million populated Singaporeans dont get the point of it. Every week, I see their hosts doing pointless stuffs in the advertisement, for example; the two women dress weird and they do some weird walking down, and the male host in a tuxedo acting James Bond 007. Then I see a giant edition of the 'PSC Nite Coupon' coming out from the side of the television screen and the three hosts act like kids receiving lollipops; jumping around. Otherwise, we see them dressed as some Romeo Juliet outfit and the giant coupon thing comes out again. Most of us don't get the point of the advertisement at all. We just stare at the screen wondering " What the hell is their point?" or in our uniquely Singlish terms, "We catch no balls."
Well, that was just those pointless advertisements. Then there are those advertisements which place artistes over their products. We see Fann Wong, Zoe Tay and company doing those slimming pull advertisements. In Fann Wong's, we see the camera on her all the time and a mere spilt second on her product. In Zoe Tay's, we see her, in the older version of the advertisement that is, shaking her hips and saying "CHA CHA CHA" for the weirdest songs/slogan ever.
Then there are those advertisements that really, are ingenious. Some may seem ridiculous but they just bring out the most important point of it. Let's take the Coke Lime advertisement as an example. We see people acting weirdly and chanting " put the lime in the coke, you nut. " We see a lime and a can of coke. We get the point of it almost immediately; Coca Cola has a new flavour and its called Coke Lime. There's also the advertisement in which we see everyone shaking terribly, but its a freezeframe when the camera takes the shot. We get the point simple again.
I think I've splattered alot of complaints already, and porbably you might find me demanding. But the fact is, we, as audience to the advertisements, just demand higher quality and not pointless showcasing.
